On the surface it may seem bare and uninhabited, but there's plenty to discover and see. Extensive yet short, this world through Monroe's eyes is beautiful. It's this juxtaposition of a lonely child with an active imagination clamoring on to what remains of his mother that makes The Unfinished Swan so lovely. The scoring succeeds in moving the story forward, contrasting but not fixating on the darker themes of the game. The offbeat recluse king, who you get to know throughout the chapters and finally meet at the very end, is represented with more textured electronic harpsichord sounds. Without coincidence, the plucky young boy is represented largely by plucked string instruments, matching his starry-eyed character. The warm melodic backdrop helps you understand, experience and feel this world through his lens. Yet seeing the bigger picture inspires Monroe, helping him find not just the swan but a part of himself.Ĭontrasting the inherent sorrow that drives Monroe's journey is music that's as whimsical and imaginative as his personality. By the final chapter, the pieces of the puzzle come together, showing just how vast and desolate this kingdom is. In a very meta sort of way, the art of discovery through paint and the game's palette itself mirror the incompleteness of the painting - and of Monroe.
The emptiness that dominated the beginning of the game soon gets filled in - with shadows, strokes, muted colors and wonderfully fanciful backstory. There are four short chapters to this video game, and with each passing one, the kingdom comes more into focus. The Unfinished Swan is centered around puzzles, exploration, creation and discovery. The paint (and later, water) reveals the 3D space behind the white, helping identify objects, walls and pathways. That, along with the swan's footsteps, helps guide you through an unfinished kingdom. Soon after, you figure out that the triggers sling black paint. You, as Monroe, begin in a blank canvas - everything around you is a flat, untextured white void. It can feel a bit lonely at times, since this isn't just a one-player game but largely a one-character game.
